The island of Krk has about 16.000 inhabitants that live in 7 municipalities: Krk, Omišalj, Malinska, Punat, Baška, Dobrinj and Vrbnik. These 7 historic places have an autonomous development and keep their customs, local costumes and tradition that are very different from each other.

The richness of cultural, historical and customs inheritance of the island of Krk is a very interesting field of research of every person who is in love with the past centuries and loves history. The most important historical/archeological finds are: roman municipality Curicta (Krk) with the special emphasis on the Cathedral of Krk, the Cathedral of the 1500 years old Krk's diocese and long time ago abandoned old city of Furfinum near Omišalj, that was built in the 1st century AD. At the outskirts of this old city there is an impressive old roman complex Mirina which was built in the 5th century. Only the church of St.Nicholas has been preserved from that complex. The island is rich with the heritage of the old croatian little churches (St. Donatus, St. Kerševan from the 9th century)… Bašćanska ploča is an unique glagolitic inheritance of the island of Krk which dates back to 1100 and represents the first written documet in croatian found in the church of St. Lucy in Jurandvor.

The city of Krk has always been since illyric and early christian age the historical centre of the island and is usually called ''the most splendid city of the inhabitants of the island of Krk'' about which testifies a Latin stone inscription from the 3rd or 4th century, famous for its impressive Frankopan's castle and excellently preserved city walls. There are also some picturesque medieval castles as those of Omišalj, Vrbnik, Dobrinj and Baška, Punat with the small island of Košljun, an unique richness of natural and cultural inheritance which has been kept for almost 550 years by Franciscan monks. Not far away from Malinska in the village of Porat there is a monastery of St. Mary Magdalene which has existed for more than 500 years and that has been transformed into a monastery museum with valuable exhibits. In the monastery there is a glagolitic collection of stone monuments where you can see the copies of the oldest and most important croatian glagolitic texts. This is just a part of places that are worth visiting.
